One of the best things about going out to dinner is the complimentary bread, am I right?? How many times have you not been able to stop yourself from overindulging and by the time your entree arrives, you’re full! Guilty! My favorite seafood restaurant features their popular cheddar bay biscuits as their complimentary bread option! The buttery deliciousness is completely irresistible, so I set out to recreate it at home! The melty cheese, the salty spices with a touch of garlic: I give you my version of copycat cheddar bay biscuits!
What You Will Need
- Large mixing bowl
- Wooden Spoon
- Biscuit cutter or upside down glass
- Pastry Blender
- Measuring cups and spoons
- Liquid measuring cup
- Dough mat
- Pastry Brush
- Cookie Sheet (or I used a pizza pan this time)
- Small bowl for melting butter
Ingredients for Copycat Cheddar Bay Biscuits
Biscuits
- 3 Cups Organic Flour
- 1 Tbsp Organic Cane Sugar
- 1 tsp Garlic Salt
- 4 tsp aluminum-free baking powder
- 1/2 tsp cream of tartar
- 3/4 cup butter (you do not want this to be softened at all)
- 2 cups shredded Cheddar cheese
- 1 egg
- 1 cup milk
Buttery Topping
- 2 Tbsp butter, melted
- 1/2 tsp Italian seasoning
- 1/4 tsp garlic powder
- 1/4 tsp salt
- 1 Tbsp grated parmesan cheese
Instructions for Copycat Cheddar Bay Biscuits
- Preheat oven to 450 degrees.
- First, add all dry biscuit ingredients to a large mixing bowl. Combine well.

- Cube your butter and cut it into the dry ingredients using a pastry blender. You will want to work until butter is in small (approximately pea-sized) chunks.

- Next, add the cheddar cheese and stir to work it in fairly uniformly.

- Add the egg and milk to the mixture. Stir all ingredients together with wooden spoon. The dough will seem almost furry but will be sticky to the touch and is a little hard to handle.

- Turn onto baking mat. Knead and work with your hands until most of the remaining flour is combined and dough comes together into a ball. Dough will still be flaky, not smooth like bread dough.

- Flatten with your hands or a rolling pin to a thickness of 3/4 to an inch thick.

- Using the biscuit cutter or an upside-down glass, cut out 10-12 biscuits (Note: Once you have cut out all the biscuits that you have room for, gather the dough up again and flatten and you should be able to get one or two more out of it!)

- Place biscuits 1-2 inches apart on the baking sheet.
- Melt butter and add all other “buttery topping” ingredients to the melted butter. Stir well.
- Use the pastry brush to brush on the buttery topping. Bake for 10-12 minutes until golden brown. Use care to ensure that the bottoms aren’t burning. It is very common for there to seem to be a lot of melted butter on the sheet when you remove them from the oven.

Serving suggestions

These would be great served with seafood options, as the original is served, but it is also a great option with anything that you would serve garlic bread with. Would pair well with Italian dishes, such as spaghetti or lasagna.
