How to Cope When Life Is All Too Much

As a mama, I’m going to be real: it has been a struggle of late! So many things on my plate, and my mind so often will not stop spinning. I hit a really low point recently and reached out to my husband. I told him I just couldn’t do it anymore this particular day! The kids were behaving so badly, I was trying to work on my at-home business, I was exhausted and needed a nap (hello- almost half-way through this pregnancy), my head was hurting, and I wanted to cry (and I assure you I did). It was all too much for me! I was just at the end!

I was trying so hard and just could not keep up with the demands of life! I just couldn’t! Can you relate? I’m here to share with you some things that Jesus whispered to me on that low, low day! I hope you’ll hear me, not as someone who has learned all the lessons, but as someone who is continually learning what the Lord is teaching me about how to cope when life is all too much for me. The next time you are overwhelmed with life, try these things! I know they will make a difference because they did for me!

Run to Jesus When It’s All Too Much

person reaching to Jesus with the words Run to Jesus

As I got to my breaking point that day, I remember getting in the shower and just sobbing out to Jesus that I just couldn’t do it anymore. He knew my heart- just how exhausted I was, how much I was trying to juggle it all, and He knew how I felt like a failure. I poured out my heart to Him as the water beat down on me, and He began to whisper truths to my hurting heart.

They were truths I already knew, but I had forgotten! Isn’t that just like the Holy Spirit? Jesus told us about these reminders when He walked here on earth!

But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance
John 14:26 KJV
Tweet

I’m so thankful for the Comforter, as I write this! When we run to Jesus, He dispatches the Comforter to remind us of exactly the truths we need to hear in that moment.

Listen to Jesus When It’s All Too Much

woman praying and text that says Listen to Jesus

After I had poured out my heart and cried so many tears, I began to listen. I had told the Lord that it was all too much- that I couldn’t do it, and He began to remind me that I was right. What? You might say, how is that a comfort to an overwhelmed heart?

The Holy Spirit began to remind me that I was not strong enough, that I had been trying so hard and I just did not have the strength to keep up! Here’s the thing: I never will be strong enough. There is a popular idea today that you are “enough,” but I’m here to burst that bubble! You are not “enough”! I am not “enough”! This is why we are constantly overwhelmed and feel as though we are on a hamster wheel that never stops!

Here is the beautiful part though: He began to remind me that HE was enough! Because we need Jesus, through Him is the only way we can ever be “enough.” He whispered this verse into my heart, and oh, how it encouraged me!

Faithful is he that calleth you, who also will do it.
1 Thessalonians 5:24 KJV
Tweet

You see, he called me to motherhood. He called me to be an encourager through the things I write. He called me to care for my home, and when I cannot do these things in my own strength, He is faithful to fulfill what I cannot. He will work in me and through me. HIS strength, not mine! He’s called you too- to whatever it is that is closest to your heart! If we can just get quiet enough to listen to His whispers, He will be our strength to fulfill those callings!

Get Into God’s Word When It’s All Too Much

woman with Bible and text that say Get Into God's Word

Know the Word, friend! By knowing God’s Word, the Holy Spirit can speak it into your heart when you don’t have the strength to pick up your Bible. Throughout the rest of that day, I was reminded of truth after truth about how it was His strength and power and not my own that would get me through another day.

Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us.
Ephesians 3:20 KJV
Tweet

Again, HIS power working in me- not my own! He is my strength and I do NOT need to despair because I am not enough! He knew I would never be enough, and that is why He wants to teach me to rely on Him. In the Old Testament it tells us this:

For thou hast been a strength to the poor, a strength to the needy in his distress, a refuge from the storm, a shadow from the heat, when the blast of the terrible ones is as a storm against the wall.
Isaiah 25:4 KJV
Tweet

This was exactly what my poor, needy, distressed spirit needed! A Strength that emanated from Someone who is all-powerful, who IS strength! The next chapter over, Isaiah reminds us that this strength will never run low! It will never end! What a treasure to remember this truth from God’s Word when life gets to be all too much.

Trust ye in the LORD for ever: for in the LORD JEHOVAH is everlasting strength:
Isaiah 26:4 KJV
Tweet

Listen to Songs to Encourage Yourself

Not only did the Spirit remind me of verses that spoke straight to my heart’s need in that moment, He began to bring a song to my mind as well!

lyrics to the song "His Strength is Perfect"
“His Strength Is Perfect” by Jerry Salley and Stephen Curtis Chapman

If you are feeling the overwhelm today, I encourage you to take a listen to this song!

Rest In Jesus When It’s All Too Much

blocks that say rest and text that says rest in Jesus

I hope several things have crossed your mind as you’ve read today. First, I hope that you do not feel so alone. It is so easy to look on at other people’s lives and envision that they have it all together. Their children are perfect! Their houses are always spotless (I mean, look at their social media photos)! They don’t ever sob in the shower because they have been inadequate for EVERY. SINGLE. TASK. they have put their hand to today!

The thing is, it’s just not true! Whether or not you’re a mother, you have thought all of these things on some level. I don’t mean to, but I have! Let’s just stop! We’re not alone! NONE of us have it all together! And those individuals who crossed your mind just now–they don’t have the strength to carry on either! They need Jesus just as much as you do! We are all so frail and flawed on our own, but oh, the things God can work IN us and THROUGH us if we will just bring our inadequacy to Him.

Secondly, I hope you have a fresh reminder that the Holy Spirit will come along side you and empower you to do the things you need to do! You can rest in Him! Paul gave his experience in his letter to Timothy when he said this:

But the Lord stood by me and strengthened me
2 Timothy 4:17 ESV
Tweet

I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.”
Philippians 4:13 KJV
Tweet

Be encouraged today, friend! You do not have to do it all! You do not walk alone. Ever! He walks along with you, making HIS strength perfect in your life. Release yourself from the pressure! You don’t have to be strong anymore! Let HIM be strong in you! Rest in Jesus, sweet friend! He’ll carry you when you can’t carry on! I’ll leave you with one final passage that was in my devotions this very morning!

Hast thou not known? hast thou not heard, that the everlasting God, the LORD, the Creator of the ends of the earth, fainteth not, neither is weary? there is no searching of his understanding. He giveth power to the faint; and to them that have no might he increaseth strength. Even the youths shall faint and be weary, and the young men shall utterly fall: But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.
Isaiah 40:28-31 KJV

Closing Thoughts

So, what should you do when life is all too much for you? Do what I did and will continue to do! I want so badly to continue to learn these lessons Jesus is teaching me!

  • Run to Jesus
  • Listen to Jesus
  • Get into God’s Word
  • Listen to Songs to Encourage Yourself
  • Rest in Jesus

Let Me Know Your Thoughts

If you have felt any of these things in your life, talk to me about it! What are some things that have helped you? As always, if you do not know Jesus as your friend and personal Savior, please reach out to me! I would love to introduce you to Him. He’s my EVERYTHING! All the things I could never be!

It is a great article! My life is too much now, and sometimes I lose hope, although I’m a pretty positive person. I’ll try to calm down, trust the process, and listen to God.

Life has it’s ups and downs and it’s so easy to fall into a slump. It’s nice to be reminded that both God or Jesus and those around us are there to help and give us strength to get through those challenging times.

Life can get to be too much quite often. Around the holidays is when I struggle most. My brain doesn’t shut off and there is always a never-ending to-do list. What helps me is asking for help from my husband and making sure I get enough rest. There is nothing wrong with a good old afternoon nap to rejuvenate you.

This is a wonderful post! I couldn’t agree more, when it all feels like too much all we can do is lean on Jesus. I feel so much peace knowing I can rely on him to carry the load of life when it all gets too heavy. Thanks for sharing this!
