One of our family’s favorite breakfasts for weekends when we have more time to cook is biscuits and this savory sausage gravy! It is just an all-around, stick-to-your-ribs kind of food that can’t be beat! Pair it with some flaky, tall, made-from-scratch biscuits and you will be set with a breakfast fit for a king!
The problem with so many sausage gravy recipes is that they end up being super bland, and I cannot even deal with bland gravy! We like something with a FULL, SAVORY flavor and this recipe checks all the boxes! In addition, I’ve carefully tweaked the ingredients so that although this is super hearty, they are also fairly clean, mostly healthy, simple ingredients.
Gather Ingredients for Savory Sausage Gravy
- 2 lbs. sausage (see the tips section for more info on cleaner options)
- 1/2 tsp sage
- 1/2 cup organic flour
- 1 heaping tsp Organic Beef Better Than Bouillon
- 1 1/2 tsp black pepper, to taste
- 1 cup organic heavy cream
- 3 cups milk
- 3-4 Tbsp organic coconut aminos
Let’s Make Some Sausage Gravy!
- First, brown up your sausage in a skillet or Dutch oven over medium heat. While the sausage is browning, sprinkle in your sage.
- Once, your sausage is nicely browned, reduce heat to medium-low and sprinkle in the flour and stir until it is well incorporated.

- Next, add your Better Than Bouillon, pepper, heavy cream, and milk. Make sure all ingredients are well combined!

- Lastly, add in your coconut aminos, and continue to simmer until it thickens to desired consistency.

Trouble Shooting Your Sausage Gravy
- My gravy is too thick! SOLUTION: Add a bit more milk in tiny increments (maybe 1/8 cup increments) until it reaches the consistency you prefer.
- My gravy is too thin! SOLUTION: Carefully and slowly add a tablespoon more flour. Stir it well so you don’t end up with flour lumps.

Tips for Finding Cleaner Ingredients
Note: Let me first say, if eating clean is not important to you, you can easily substitute whatever sausage you like, Original Better Than Bouillon, and Worcestershire Sauce for the Coconut Aminos.
- I have provided links for some of the less common ingredients. The Organic Beef Better Than Bouillon is available at Walmart. Although I wouldn’t consider this to be a completely clean option because of the “natural flavors,” it does have much simpler and cleaner ingredients than the original or than any other traditional bouillon.
- Coconut Aminos are a wonderful clean substitute for Worcestershire sauce. You can find them at a variety of grocery stores. I know Kroger carries them and you can also purchase them online from Thrive Market.
- Sausage is a tough one to find a completely clean, organic option, but you can definitely find cleaner options with simpler ingredient lists if you will take some time to look! In the first photo, you will see the ingredient list for a leading brand of sausage. By contrast, the ingredient list in the next photo is for Walmart’s Great Value brand sausage. I know that Kroger brand has the same simple ingredients. The takeaway is that store brands of sausage tend to be much cleaner options! So read your labels! You can certainly find a cleaner option!
