Nothing hits the spot quite like well-made flaky biscuits! Whether you have it as a side with beef stew, slathered with butter and jam or honey, or nestled under delicious and savory sausage gravy, I have the very best recipe for you! It is tried and true (just ask my family!) and will not disappoint, I’m confident!
If you are like me, I mostly grew up eating canned biscuits and while the convenience is definitely a plus, have you read the ingredient list for them? I have always had a preference for making things from scratch, but somewhere along the way, I got a little lazy and complacent and began buying the cans myself more often than not. When our family began our journey to making better choices a little over a year ago, the canned biscuits had to go! What are those little chunks that feel like plastic in them anyway?? (Picture my horrified face right now!)
As a side note, I’m so not perfect! Will I ever buy another can of biscuits again? Probably–but it is more about an accumulation of better choices over time than complete perfection!
I have been making these from-scratch, flaky biscuits for a number of years now and they are delicious! I can’t wait for you to try them!

What You’ll Need
- Measuring cups and spoons
- Large Mixing Bowl
- Wooden spoon
- Pastry blender
- Liquid Measuring cup
- Silicon baking mat
- Cookie Sheet
- Rolling Pin
- Biscuit Cutter or Drinking Glass
Ingredient List for Flaky Biscuits
- 3 Cups Organic Flour
- 3 Tbsp Organic Cane Sugar
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 4 tsp aluminum-free baking powder
- 1/2 tsp cream of tartar
- 3/4 cup butter (1 1/2 sticks- do not soften)
- 1 egg
- 1 cup milk
How to Make the Best Flaky Biscuits
- Preheat your oven to 450 degrees.
- First, add all dry ingredients to a large mixing bowl. Combine well.
- Cube your butter and cut it into the dry ingredients using a pastry blender. You will want to work until the butter is in small (approximately pea-sized) chunks. Trust me- this will make your biscuits so buttery and delicious!

- Next, add the egg and milk to the mixture. Stir all ingredients together with wooden spoon. The dough will seem almost furry, but will be sticky to the touch and is a little hard to handle.
- Turn out onto a well- floured surface or baking mat. Knead with your hands until it comes together into a ball. Dough will still be flaky, not smooth like bread dough.

- Flatten with your hands or a rolling pin to a thickness of about 3/4 to an inch thick.

- Prepare cookie sheet by lining with a silicon baking mat.
- Using the biscuit cutter or an upside-down drinking glass, cut out 10-12 biscuits. (Note: Once you have cut out all the biscuits that you have room for, gather the dough up again and flatten and you should be able to get one or two more out of it!)

- Place biscuits 1-2 inches apart on the cookie sheet and bake for 10-15 minutes until golden brown. Use care to ensure that the bottoms aren’t burning.

This biscuit recipe sounds delicious and seems pretty straightforward. I enjoy making as much of our own food as possible in order to avoid all the extra nasty ingredients. I’ve pinned this to refer back to.
